Go to school, get good grades then secure yourself a job. We have all heard it before, it’s what is expected out of everybody. The statement is kinda cute. I am not writing this to ridicule the academics, I believe that through education you can explore and impact the world like none other. The term education has been used so many times that it has lost its sentimental value, often confused with instruction. There is no such a thing as educators, there is no noun for education that’s the first mistake we made. We cooked it.
This gave an impression that if you have a doctorate degree you are educated because there were educators educating you, that’s bull. Rather what we have is instructors, and no matter how much you can be instructed if you don’t learn you will never be educated.
In my life, I have seen schooled people not necessarily educated. The current instructing system doesn’t endorse education if you are good at memorising you good to go—cum laude! Let’s unpack education and bear with me as I make my case. Education is three-fold:
- Instruction- given by an instructor which is dubbed as a teacher
- Learning- this is an effort made by a student to grasp the content, by learning I mean
- Understanding which gives birth to
- Critical Thinking about the subject to an extent backing it up if a contest is initiated
- Application- having being instructed, and kicked sense out of the topic you are now able to apply it where appropriate.
Now that is altogether education which is the only element that brings wisdom, wisdom is nothing but applied knowledge. We go to school hoping that we will be wise, but there is something wrong about the schooling system, I don’t want to call it an education system because it only consists of instruction. People are taught what to think and how to think and now it’s worse because people don’t think at all, instead of thinking they just google it!
Go to school
The problem with this it’s that at school in South Africa you initially have 9 subjects, in which they are the criteria which are being used so that you can identify your strengths. They fail the test of education because what learners have to do is just memorise and they will be good to go. Another predicament about this it’s that it narrows their thinking capacity therefore by going to school, all they think about its homework and assignments not having time to understand the concept better and worse not having to think about themselves. With all the work overload, where will they get time for self-discovery?
And may I bring to your attention that the subjects being studied were someone else’ hobby. People like Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton, Socrates mastered their hobby so well in a manner that they have influenced the entire generation. Call them genius if you please, then I will make my case and say they are a genius because they defined the rules and set a bar based on their attributes. Let’s say I draw a painting, a random one for that matter with every paint just spread all over the place, and you try to copy that. You stand no chance of duplicating it, and if you set my painting as a standard—you will never be a mastermind based on my painting. I have set the rules and the standard, the only standard you will ever meet—it’s your standard.
Get good grades
Your grades will never be good enough. First, it’s someone else’ standard, which will take you a universe and a half to meet. Secondly, what the schooling system teaches is not usually applicable to the world this only means you can learn it, but won’t be able to apply it, therefore, it doesn’t meet the education criteria. Can you imagine a University student being taught how to develop the desktop application? Let’s say he finishes the course, where will he apply that knowledge. We have passed that stage of desktop applications. More like trying to master how to ride a donkey and expected to drive a Ferrari when you are “qualified”. Getting good grades is cute until you find out they are good for nothing if you study what is not applicable.
Get a job
This one is personal because it sounds like an insult in this day and age. Get a job? Where Mr Wiseman? The employment rate is decreasing, not that Ellon Mask is moving jobs to Mars they are disappearing. If a job was an animal, it would be an endangered species. A factory used to have more than 100 employees to make underwear’s and today machines can do that effectively being controlled by only five people. Someone unpacked the term JOB with Just over Broke. The middle class has disappeared already, the schooling system trained people to be employees.
People go through all of this because they want money. What is the highest paying job? they google and study towards something they don’t even like in which they apply the CPF rule Cram Pass and Forget. Only to realise that in the corporate world there is a ladder to be climbed ad due to the rate of innovation the ladder is not stable, one mistake all your labour will be gone and if there is no foundation of education, you are dead! It would have been better if the statement said find work, not a job, yes there is a difference go google it since you were not taught to think if you don’t know.
The manager said “sorry, but we are not hiring”, the real estate agent said “we don’t want your grades, but your bank statement” and the bank said, “when are you paying the remainder of your study loan”. Though everything is about money, school is not even willing to teach about money, why? It’s either a set up so that people will pass at school and fail in life or we just ignorant. Let’s get Educated. You want to send me to school? I’ll pass thank you. Get me educated, then my grammar will be sound.
